Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority

The Columbia Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority invited me to attend a Richland County Council forum with some of the candidates on May 8, 2018. I made it early and spent some time talking with several of the leaders of this organization and had them explain some of the great things they are doing in their community. They spend many hours helping with the young women enhancing education in the midlands. One of the ladies explained that they are founded on Christian values and worked on the women's suffrage movement.

The forum was done really well with several questions being submitted and then a moderator would ask each candidate the same question. I thought this was a good way for the candidates to let everyone know who they are and also allow the voters in their district to learn about the candidates. I learned a lot about each person and was not surprised that Chakisse Newton won the Democratic primary back on June 12, 2018. Although she has never been elected, she was connected and well versed in the current problems we are facing in Richland County.
